hi my name is Sarah a mess I'm a licensed clinical social worker working in private practice as a therapist to individuals and families and Nashville Tennessee and some of my colleagues at Vanderbilt University I'll be willing to offer some support and guidance for attempt to finish out the school year in a virtual platform so just a little bit of background prior to Mount wrestling practice I spent eight years working in school here in Nashville and I have gained so much insight for my partnership with teachers I have just the ultimate respect for the dedication commitment that teacher to bring to their students every day so I wanted to start this off by thanking you for who you are and for what for what you do what you've already been doing in for these new challenges that you're taking off this is just the new world that were all living in right now and a lot of Industries are having given it to work from home setting and everyone is figuring it out and learning as we go but the idea of working from home for educators is significantly different and I know a lot of you are trying to process a million things right now and you're trying to evaluate and modify their personal and professional my hope is to offer a little bit of guidance and support and a lot of encouragement on how you can care for yourself well as you care for your students over the next several days one thing that I personally a practice that I don't like to keep you alive for myself with my client with task colleagues with friends and family is an emotional check in engagement so as we start off our time today and maybe a practice that could be a beneficial to you moving forward self and evaluate what emotion am I nothing right now label and specifically as you can okay I am experiencing anxious anxiety I'm experiencing disappointment I'm experiencing her I'm experiencing compartment labeled as specifically as weekend rate the intensity of that emotion I like to know is this more frustration that I experienced at a similar setting a few days ago or is this less than quantify the intensity of the emotion that I'm experiencing next I like to pick up my Approach and allow a person to be there I'm not going to judge that I'm not going to judge myself experiencing an emotion is there a negative experience I mean if I'm frustrated is there a way that I can move a little bit coping skills in my tool kit do I have any resources available for me to bring my frustration level and I'm experiencing is there a way to have any resources order ways that I can sustain this positive experience so I actually forgot today I didn't buy all of you to evaluate and write the experience that you're having right now right the intensity and then to accept it and then also to explore the possibilities in One Direction or another what's the status of emotionally checking is in also be helpful as your transition you're in a state of stress you're changing your homework format to be helpful to you do as an individual but also the beer students an SEL tool that you may be able to give them to continue to build their social emotional muscle and to calibrate their own experience with it and now they're also working from home so ugly we could forward now that we're all checked in and I know what emotions are experiencing I'd like to go over just a couple of tips that have come from a variety of resources around best practices successful tips for working from home and that's true of any industry with what's going on in the world right now Gators and so that's kind of cold down the information to a couple of helpful tips that will hopefully he'll attainable to you and also feel like you can you can do that leave our time together feeling work from home and I can do it I can do it well when is the first ideas is to name you already has so maintain your say wake up time a lot of people with a transition to work from home in Tennessee is to sleep a little later because you don't have to commit right and that does make sense I can also set off your routine for the entire day you can't maintain and maybe there's room for a little more but it is probably helpful at least for this. Of time to maintain all the things that you already did and got practice might be helpful for you to pass a law on students in their families as well watch the students kids and adolescents and adults struggle with transition and Ice even with anise will be moving from classroom activities activities within the same classroom and so it may help some of those students especially to how to continue to say Mercy in the morning the same time eat breakfast if that's what they take off the PJs put on our school clothes what there where there had needs to be for the next several and I wouldn't rooted it may be helpful encourage parents to encourage that is well another thing that's really helpful in a work-from-home environment is to create a space at your home in a perfect world we are will have enough room in our homes to have a sleep space and eating space a relaxing space and a workspace that may not mean that you're in and this is an opportunity for creativity this is an opportunity for it might be helpful to try to remain positive and what for opportunity to Sweet and create an to change what's already going on in your phone some of the research around having a separate space I'm spending idea that it's really difficult to transition your mind if you if you wake up and then just bring your laptop to your bed and try to get to work in the place that you just woke up from a really hard mentally to chest chest pain level of motivation and productivity that you're on the flip side I can be the king create obstacles when it's time to turn off work and go to sleep it's because now you're bad at being in a place of work all day and so I thought I would I always encourage people to if you're going to protect any space in your home and keep work out of it I would say to protect your sleeping space if you have to work from your bedroom and maybe you bring a chair from a chair into the room to work from other than sitting on your bed or utilize your dresser as a desk space if possible there's ways to be creative if you have to work dining room kitchen table just flip your perspective try to sit in a different place to where you're not sitting in the same space that you sent when you eat your dinner every night and it's probably helpful especially for parents if your to work in a space in your home what are your view does not distract you from what you need to be doing it it might be helpful during this time to think outside the box of what would really help me as an individual what is my work style wood right now face a window can I save a separate area in my home to create some kind of boundary so I have a separate workspace what again what works for you is what I would encourage helpful practice to build an when you're working from home is just a blush boundaries and break times for yourself so I know that in education the schedule is survival us are responding to the strain responding to distress by mapping out an accounting for every second of our day we want everything that we have before us and really did all this virtual learning thing in this season for an unprecedented level of stress and strain is it might be helpful to you from that mode of productivity to a more General structure so they are definitely some of those things have to be on our own that's right but I'm wondering if I were General structure here's the thing that has to happen and here here I'm going to build in flexibility I'm going to expect I'm going to expect change I'm going to expect things to be rearranged ideally and you also have a lot small opportunities in the school day for socializing but you spend a lot of time around your colleagues and that is a huge aspects of the work-from-home adjustment give me the times for Speed at the level of productivity in a lot of times it's because of the loss of a social engagement and you might see that with your students to the loss of their class might really affect their their social emotional learning style it might really affect the productivity it might really affect their focus and attention and that's something to consider in Den to be gentle with also another huge factor that promotes families all around the country and the world probably is that so many of us are transitioning to working from home right so they are also they don't have the ability to be at school and so so many of us are wearing multiple hats for full-time Educators were full-time student a lot of change I would really I was really I would encourage you to just allow for flexibility and teachers teachers are Masters at allowing for flexibility even the teachers with the most stringent schedule what could go wrong right when you leave a lesson plan for substitute you have all you have plan B C D E and F right and this. Same skillset is going to serve right now is your working or you're going to plan for interrupting to fly into things to go with on your game plan for technological difficulties schedule changes in ability to access your student there's all kinds of new barriers that you still have same skillset that allows you to Pivot and come up with a back-up plan and a back-up plan for The Back-up Plan as you're working from home it might be helpful with your children present if that's your situation is to work in a space and I this is not feasible for everyone but to have a space for a Georgian close if it is feasible for your family for your phone that's all I can really help set the self to be in the zone that you also set the tone for your family the door is closed so after this moment is not an inaccessible right if you don't have the other day because of the structure of your home or is the age of your children maybe there's a way to have a more flexible barrier by rearranging a bookshelf that you have a little bit of boundaries when you have children in the artist helpful at signals to what my dad is doing right now another step that is not a novel idea to parents you're already doing this is to maximize the time when your children are already occupied or when they're sleeping over your child they have a great from their responsibility when their child is occupied or resting or whatever and it may be helpful during this time when there's already so many expectations you to have a pretty concrete short list of things that you can expect to get done while your child is occupied each time and that might help that will help a lot of people manage their expectations and keep the healthy flexible perspective on on what's Happening lastly when it comes to wearing multiple hats instead of this just simply cannot be avoided but if you're able to limit multitasking in some ways and sound areas so it may look like this 30 minutes I am doing this lesson for my students and I was unavailable I'm not available to my family during that 30 minutes but the flip side of that is when they were completed for the day you'll get about what has happened professionally to separate yourself from your work space that's another positive of having a separate workspaces that you can walk away from it leaves you know the to-do list for tomorrow what's your computer with your bus and then spending time with your children or your partner or your pets or yourself whatever your situation is allow the separation to be fully present with not outside of work if needs be okay by Bollea last a kind of foundational piece all of this is to take care of ourselves. a lot of Educators white people in education world end your careers this might be an opportunity to take a breath and I encourage a lot of my clients you create multiple task list you create the First with everything that you helped to complete all objectives this would be absolutely best scenario I can do all of these things and that includes what might be feasible to bring this time and it's going to explode some of the things that you definitely have to there's something on negotiable something this second task list is an opportunity to prioritize but absolutely has to happen which what would be great to happen and then create a list of the things that you were able to let go and things Atwood in an ideal world you can complete them all but if I have to cut something from my list because my children or I have technical technical difficulties logging in tomorrow or fall ill can't complete everything I needed to work I needed to complete from home these are the things I'd be okay not completing rescue honest expectations of yourself and to really look at what what do I need to feel successful at the end of this day the end of this week at the end of this whole virtual learning work-from-home semester what are the things that are going to really I'm going to really value having completed and what it's going to feel like a win for me at the end of this and there's always a few things that would be great but you could live with yourself you could Belfield successful if you did it accomplish some of those things so I would encourage just hey everyone everyone in the world to take a look at some of the expectations for yourself and evaluate them a little bit more for me spell success perspective in. You really helped lay the foundation for all of us really need to be gentle with ourselves during this time this is a new world for all of us globally all types of Industries and economies and families are having him it and address and we I just really want to encourage each of you to be gentle with this process we're all trying to figure this out we're all in together and we're all doing the best that we can with the resources that we have available and that I know so many of you already from that might that for your students and your families and it's hard to not let him what we talked about self care a lot of people the reputation of self-care it is bubble baths and pedicures and those things are our great yourself chair and they definitely can work however I have found them if you're not caring for yourself on a foundational level then when you try to enjoy things like a pedicure or a bubble bath in your mind you cannot call me anxiety all games all picture if you hadn't taken care of yourself on a basic level and so what do I mean by that basics here it looks like the things that we've mentioned before it looks like physical boundary separating your work by former personal life as best you can in the in the setting it looks like taking care of your self and taking care of your family it looks like setting realistic expectations of yourself and being gentle with the result you may let a lot of people are very hard on themselves a lot of people are hard on themselves if they don't achieve at the level that they that they think is an a right and this is just a different situation we're not all going to get a raise in this this semester and and allowing that to be for yourself another Foundation aspect of self-care it's maintaining the feeling and encouraging social relationships particular particular virtual learning can be a little isolated to be isolating for your students they're going to mourn the loss of their classroom activities in their time with their classmate and that might be something that you can keep in mind if you encourage dad find creative ways to help your students engage with each other also maybe there are ways to engage with your Kali there I heard of some Educators that have scheduled a week lead just 30-minute meeting virtual seating that is just positive affirmations it's not oriented it's not work related it's just a cremation for each other just to get that little dose of Serotonin and and keep it moving and that might be there might be ways to continue to work with your car around Virginia Virtual platform another helpful idea might be to maintain a level of exercise and a diet that supports you and supports your goals right now so what does that mean if your if you were training for a marathon that has now been canceled it might be helpful to you and to your mindset to keep up that level of training keep up that level of exercise. play Nev that time to utilize your energy and it in that way that's great if that's what your body needs if that's what your mind some of us might be the type to Marathon cancel I cannot continue to come get that level of time and energy and space to training that much so I'm going to scale it back to your level of Fitness that fits my schedule right now that's it with my family. emotional sandwich to yourself too soon and for a second pause from the play pause from all that has to be done and evaluate what do I need in this time how can I feel successful if I need to build in a little extra Fitness to have some release and to get out of the house and space and social distancing let's do that if I need yo back my expectations and allow myself to exercise whichever direction is going to be helpful to you in this time it's okay to expand. And it's all sorts of lean into that it's also helpful to keep in mind that we are under a sign of stress and our knees might look different when you're under stress and that's okay final helpful hint maybe to consider professional help with lots of therapist offer over to an online counseling I myself offer online counseling and right now in our world a lot of people are are reaching out for those resources and if that's what you need right now so quickly as we wrap up I'm going to share my screen with you and show you a couple of resources that I've down so we don't have to play the wheels are all of these things there's lots of good resources out there on the web and I'm just going to quit playing walk through a few of them with you and gentle with me while I transition all right here we have a couple of sites starting with very well mind. Com great article that got a ton of free articles around mental health and wellness and they've got some great resources around the Coronavirus and this specifically covers coping with you know what does it look like for us right now in our world so that could be helpful and it's not this article is not overwhelming information all of the time it has a huge Cafe of guided meditations they are categorized and a lot of them are related specifically to what's going on in right now these are great resources for yourself as well as your students and their families the podcast also like a block letter format and they have this episode around letting yourself off the hook advice for teachers and parents during covid-19 for a lot of colleagues and families would be the Washington Post gather links to several sites around the world that created virtual tours so maybe if you need we talk about boundaries you need one of those bright need a break for 10 15 minutes you have lots of the Sistine Chapel maybe summer but you really enjoyed or maybe something you've never had the opportunity to visit my brain break if you will fight.
