John C. Fremont A-G Counselors and the College Empowerment School Social Worker supervised a fieldtrip of twenty students from all grade levels to the Black College Expo at Narbonne High School on February 8, 2018. All six of Fremont’s seniors who attended received on the spot acceptance into at least one Historically Black College (HBCU). Students were asked to bring transcripts, tests scores, letters of recommendations, and were interviewed before receiving their acceptance. Both Tamera Hull and Tobias Felton received a scholarship for $2,000. In addition, Riana Edwards received acceptance into six HBCU’s and received a $3,000 scholarship! This collaboration between LAUSD and The Black College Expo exposed students to the possibilities of HBCU’s as viable options, and provided more opportunities for students of color to attend college.
