Highlights of Students' 2023 Summer Adventures

Kimberly Garcia

Describe Your Program:
For 7 weeks, I worked 9am-4pm at MLK Hospital. Each week was a different schedule. I worked in the operating room, the ICU, the pharmacy, in Labor & Delivery or with Clinical Dietitians or Respiratory Therapists.

What were some of the best highlights of your program?
I got to observe an open stomach surgery and a leg amputation procedure.

What did you learn?
I learned a lot! I learned about public speaking, how to document medicine, how to operate various medical equipment. I got certified in CPR and learned about breast cancer and did a TED Talk about it. I also learned more about diabetes. I was able to shadow many different nurses in several departments. I learned how to do charts for patients.

Do you recommend this program to other students?
Yes, definitely. It showed me a lot about the medical field. I know now that this is the field I want to go into. I got to meet a lot of people who I will keep in contact with. It can be challenging at times but it is a very good experience.
