Workshop is Library databases versus websites can anyone tell me what the difference is 4 * anyone know the difference no okay the definition of database sorry about that let me start over hold on okay me go back okay so what database is a large collection of data organized for Rapid search and retrieval by a computer I tell students that a database would be like taking libraries in the United States around the world throwing all the information in the air into the cloud and then pulling it down retrieving it so it sits there and waits for you to bring it down k and basically this is the PowerPoint that I use when I teach students about a database and how to access a database that interfaces get their information from experts or Professionals in the field and we review the different titles so EDD J D MD Ph.D psy.d and students take a moment and try to guess what they are soul of the big difference between a library database and a website is that websites can be written by anyone farthest of their expertise correct yes mr. granny thank you so thank you I explained to the students and I bring up Wikipedia where I show the disc play aimer get the information can be edited by anyone and I show them this site and they they have a good time with it so this isn't a website call the Pacific Northwest tree octopus in when they said they look kind of confused and we go through it and then some students will figure out that it is fake so I tell students you are not going to find this in a database and you're not going to find Wikipedia in a database any questions so far better database Okay so Library databases they can contain published Works were faxed have been checked they've been checked by peers with similar subjects in the field so they have an editorial part of subject experts who review and evaluate submissions for Publications so it is clearly better at a website is not necessarily checked by an expert as we all know databases are easy to sight in a work cited page and may create a citation for you so for example I went into in cycling Britannica to look up database and it provided this citation for me and websites more than often do not provide the information necessary to complete a citation I have all this stuff over here shoot sorry again I went too fast okay and what's nice about a database is that it can help you narrow your topic or suggest a related subject and there is something called a Boolean search it's a system of logic showing relationships between sets by using the words and or and not so you could have what ticks you could put in for your search Politics or election and the media or you could put politics or election not just as an example of nuts from that means you don't want any information with Trump's name in it okay or Biden so you can really specify and narrow your search Who's Laughing their Mister Solis databases are updated frequently and include the date of publication and websites may not include when a page is updated so you have to be very careful because you don't know they last with important information or pertinent information or current information so if you went on to wire.com coronavirus you're not going to fight when it was last updated and of course we know with medical information Health technology science Everything Changes quickly so you have to make sure it's updated and another good thing about a library database you could tell your students is that there is a print equivalent so that means that if you're looking up a a scholarly Journal a magazine article newspaper article book there is a print equivalent out there somewhere so another thing good about databases if your vitals students if your prefer will your teacher ask you to have two books and five websites and they can't find a book that has the most current information a database the information in database is Prince okay and I tell students you do access the database sites online but it is not considered a website okay so you can determine if your Source has a print equivalent yeah you can find the volume issue number page numbers publication date and author information any questions okay let me see what's in the chat okay, slender hack all right so let's take a look at the database so I'm going to log on to schoology what's nice is that they put it on schoology and you guys can still okay make sure you can see my screen so you would go to schoology and log on does anyone know where you would find the database and schoology has any tried it that's why I want to learn Miss Jones so you going to go to the waffle 1 students learn about the database they love it cuz they're not all over the Internet doing a search through Google and I told students they don't have to worry if it is credible in the database I tell them it's been selected by La Unified and the sites are credible La unified paid millions of dollars to bring the sides to a staff and students so when you are on campus you do now how to log on again but since we're off campus we have to log into the database so I didn't know you guys were I'm sorry click on the waffle and then Lau the digital library so again you need to sign in once more just use your single sign-on and password and here we go so again these are not websites I tell students these are subscription sites meaning they are paid for. Cost a lot money for this La unified changes them from year to year year the year they add a subscription sites they take away unfortunately because of everything going on a lot of these subscription sites do not work and so it it can be frustrating so if you are going to take your students into the database just check and make sure that they're working first so for example abc-clio isn't working Cavendish take quite a few let me take you to where they are working American national biography is is touch-and-go it's it works sometimes I did submit a ticket to it last week when I found out I was going to be doing Speedy they just got back to me today and said they are aware of the issues with the subscription sites so I'm going to take you to Encyclopedia Britannica students really like this there are three different levels so you can look at elementary and just look at the difference the colors the print K so clearly I don't want that for high school middle no High School okay anyone have a knife give what they like to search anybody okay I did the commedia dell'arte okay Mr granny what is that that's the Italian form of theater that involved in the Renaissance maybe I'll spell it c o m e d i a Dell Dell I text a r t e is it look like no but work well they won't be doing any research on that then but you can certainly go someplace else so last week I did a research lesson and we looked up Joe by hey so also I want to show you guys level 3 is high school right level one is Elementary level to so I was actually doing the lesson with Miss Jefferson's students so I took them into high school but we actually went back to level 1 and they didn't know that they were actually in elementary peso click on Joe Biden so here's all the information for them and if you wanted to be able to cite the source you could click on here site and there it is MLA APA what makes the citation for you so let's go 2 okay let's go to world book that's another one that's working well let's search electoral college okay here we go and in the database they will also read it to you so here you can have it read and if you click on the Wheel save share print citation translate text so we could get our citation again MLA APA Harbor any questions let's see what's in the chat okay mr.
